A Letter from a Stranger

Claire2Today I was saddened to hear about the passing of fellow mental health blogger, Claire Greaves (trigger warning: Mental Illness Talk). Though I had never met her, I’d followed her blog and advocacy work for several years. I found her writing both relatable and inspiring. She certainly touched my life.

Several months ago I decided on a whim to mail her a letter while she was in the hospital. I hoped maybe this small act would brighten her day just a little. I don’t know if she ever got the letter, but I hope she did. I hope she knew that she meant something to a stranger across the sea. Rest in peace, Claire.

Dear Claire,

Hello. My name is Morgan. You don’t know me personally, but I have been following your blog for quite some time. I’m sorry to hear about your recent struggles. I wanted to send this letter to let you know a random American is thinking about you and wishing you well. It breaks my heart to hear about the pain you’re in, but I also wanted to validate that pain.

I have often found your writing incredibly raw and appreciate your honestly about mental illness. I have also found it incredibly inspiring to hear of your struggles and continued fight.

Though our stories have been different I can relate in many ways. I was released diagnosed with BPD and have been hospitalized for it, though only for short lengths of time. I also find clarify through writing, but mine originally focused on OCD.

I hope this letter lets you know there are people around the world who care about you. I know expressions like this I’ve received from stranger have helped me in small and big ways.

Best wishes in your recovery,

Morgan

P.S. I’m also a big Alice in Wonderland fan. I’ve included a few coloring pages you might enjoy.
